Grapefruit Seed Extract Thrush Treatment - a natural home remedy for thrush.
Also known as GSE or Citricidal, this extract of the seeds and white pith of grapefruits is an effective treatment for thrush.
Grapefruit seed extract is well known in the holistic community as a broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic compound.
Make sure you get grapefruit seed extract as opposed to grape seed extract.
Thrush is a nickname for an overgrowth of candida yeast that can affect inside of baby's mouth, mama's nipples and areolas, it's also what causes vaginal yeast infections and can cause a painful diaper rash characterized by a deep red color bumpy rash that can also show up in little patches outside the main diaper area and also in folds of the skin on the groin.
There are some pharmaceutical antifungals prescribed for this condition, and they can help, but not always. Many moms look for a natural remedy for thrush after feeling frustrated that Nystatin and other medical treatments aren't working.
Moms and babies on antibiotics are more susceptible to yeast overgrowth and thrush infections, as the antibiotics disrupt the natural balance of intestinal flora that naturally keeps candida yeast in check. Antibiotics are not choosy in their ability to kill living organisms so while they are effective at killing off a bacterial infection they are also killing the natural "good guys" in our intestines.
Remember to take a good probiotic supplement whenever you are on antibiotics, to help repopulate the gut with the healthy bacteria.
And you know what I'm going to say next. What you are eating is going to play a role in how you are feeling. When you have a thrush infection you must make healthy food choices to help your body get back in balance.
Look at the Candida Diet Guidelines and related pages to get help in that department.
And try this natural remedy using grapefruit seed extract for thrush.
Mix one ounce of pure water with 10 drops of liquid Grapefruit Seed Extract.
Use this solution about once an hour on mom's nipples. And when dry, apply a bit of virgin coconut oil to same affected area. Some moms swab the inside of baby's mouth too with this GSE mixture, especially the inside of the cheeks, where thrush tends to proliferate, but the taste of GSE is very bitter so may not make baby very happy.
Apply the grapefruit seed extract solution to your nipples after nursing. This will prevent your nipples from tasting bitter during nursing.
If a yeasty diaper rash occurs you can use this same solution to swab affected area during each diaper change. Make sure the skin is completely dry before putting on the fresh diaper (thrush yeasts love moist warm environments).
If this grapefruit seed extract treatment isn't strong enough for a particularly tenacious thrush infection, mom can take the GSE in oral form. 250 mgs three times a day with meals is an easy way to do it. It comes in tablets or capsules.
You can also add 10-15 drops of liquid grapefruit seed extract to the rinse cycle of laundry when washing diapers, bras, undergarments, baby towels and bath towels.
