Taking apple cider vinegar ("ACV") for heartburn may sound counter-intuitive, but for some it really works.
Many folks 50 and over, for instance, have reduced levels of stomach acid. For these and others who are overly alkaline, taking ACV creates more acid, which helps digestion, which in turn can prevent and even relieve heartburn.
For people with low levels of stomach acid:
Mix 1 -2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered ACV in a small glass of water and sip it along with your meal. Alternatively, sip the mixture a few minutes before eating your meal, to stimulate the production of digestive juices.
ACV works for many people to alleviate uncomfortable burning in the stomach and heartburn symptoms before they start, but you can also take it if you are already having the symptoms. For example, if you're a low level stomach acid type, and you wake up in the night with "acid reflux", try sipping 2 teaspoons of ACV mixed with ¼ cup of water. You should start to feel better very quickly.
Important Note: If taking ACV makes you feel worse or makes your symptoms increase you are most likely dealing with too much acid in your stomach and will feel better taking baking soda mixed into water. Baking soda is an alkaline substance and will help bring your acid levels back into balance. Mix 1-2 teaspoons baking soda into 1/4 cup water and sip it all. It tastes funky if you've never had it before but it works! You will feel relief almost immediately.
Remember that it’s best to remain in an upright position after eating. If you do lie down shortly after a meal, it's best to lay on your left side, because of the way the stomach and its valves are situated in the body. Laying on your left side will help prevent food from escaping out of the stomach back into the esophagus.
Natural-leaning doctors know of the relief that ACV provides for low-acid-level causes of heartburn, and consequently recommend it to their patients before prescribing pharmaceutical medications (which cover up the symptoms without addressing the cause).
Using raw, unfiltered ACV is more than just a wives-tale or folk remedy. Sometimes heartburn can actually be caused by too little acid in the stomach, leading to indigestion. ACV helps overly alkaline bodies restore the natural balance in the body and happens to be a wonderful remedy for relieving the heartburn.
